5 Cult Beauty Products Worth The Hype?

I can’t be the only beauty junkie that is constantly lured into buying beauty products that are raved about. Chances are that if a product is super hyped it, it will be mine. Even if I don’t try things right away (aka the Cover FX Custom Enhancer Drops that I’ve been holding out on), I eventually give in because a girl can only hold back for so long.

Are These 5 Cult Classic Beauty Products Worth The Hype?

Ben Nye Banana Powder

A few years ago this was probably the most hyped up product ever thanks to Kim K West and her makeup artist. This banana powder is supposed to be the best thing since sliced bread if you’re trying to brighten and set the under eyes. I used to love this powder until I stepped outside one day and looked in the mirror. Low and behold I had a hideous mustard colored upside down triangle under my eyes. To say it was unflattering is putting it nicely. I haven’t used it ever since that debacle and I definitely won’t be using it again. So not worth the hype! I would much rather use the banana setting powder in the Marc Jacobs #instamarc duo in Mirage or the Wet n Wild Contour Duo in Caramel Toffee.

Anastasia Glow Kit

I have the Glow Kit in Sun Dipped. It looks really dark in the pan, but it is lighter when applied to the skin so it is still wearable. These really are worth the hype! You get a ton of product for the price. And, I like that you can mix and match the shades. I love the ombre packaging and that you can take the pans out or replace them as you use them up. The only slightly negative thing I have to say is that I wish the packaging had a mirror. I don’t like how ABH doesn’t really give a mirror in their contour/highlighting palettes.

NARS Orgasm Blush

This has probably been the most hyped up blush ever. But, honestly you can do better. Is it a pretty blush? Yes! NARS blushes are really nice, and I do like this shade. But, I would much rather pick up another shade in their range or go for an Hourglass or MAC Mineralize blush instead of NARS Orgasm.

Too Faced Better Than Sex

If you’re into fluttery and voluminous lashes then definitely give this one a try because it is worth the hype. I wasn’t expecting to love this mascara, but something about it really makes the lashes look fluttery and it doesn’t clump up. I’m not a fan of spidery looking lashes on myself and much rather prefer fluffy looking lashes.

Makeup Forever HD foundation

I don’t know why it took me so long to try out this foundation because it really is amazing and worth the hype! It doesn’t feel or look heavy on the skin, it gives you a nice medium to full coverage and the shade range is really nice. I have a yellow undertone and it’s so hard to find a good one that matches that isn’t too light or too orange. The shade Y335 matches me so well!

  • Agreed on the Orgasm blush, Nars has so many other blushes that are way nicer but I think that’s the blush that Kim K also wore back in the day so people went crazy about it.

  • I’m hooked on the Better Than Sex mascara, it’s a dream! I really want to try the Makeup Forever foundation too but it’s so hard to match in the U.K!

    • I heard it’s really hard to get ahold of MUFE products in the UK. That’s such a shame because their range is so good! xx

  • i love the makeup for ever hd foundation, its one of my favourites and deserves all the hype that it gets! i need to get my hands on one of the glow kits, it’s a highlighting dream!

    • Yes! I will definitely be getting a full size of the foundation when I’m out of this sample :) xx

  • ali smith

I’m dying to try out the Makeup Forever foundation but I haven’t been able to find anywhere that sells it in the UK…talk about gutted…I feel like the glow kits are way too dark for my complexion as I’m extremely pale however I’m tempted to try the newest one out (is it moon child or something like that?)

    • Aww I hope you can get ahold of the foundation soon. It’s so good! I think they released Moon Child and Sweets. Both are unique and look beautiful!

  • I have not tried any, but I really want ABH Glow Kit in candy? Sweet? The color is really fun and less-conventional, but it draws me in the most.

    Selene Addicted

  • Aww that mini of the HD foundation is adorable! Yeah, the banana powder never appealed to me – it looked so yellow! I’ve also never really been tempted by Orgasm because there are just so many dupes out there that I already have! I am quite curious about the ABH glow kits though, I’m not sure which one I would get but!

    Tasha // shiwashiful.

    • Haha I feel like I have so many mini products! The glow kits are so pretty! Definitely a good investment :)

  • I haven’t joined the MUFE Foundation bandwagon, but everyone loves it! This brand really knows what it’s doing when it comes to foundations. I’m sure to try this product out once I have the budget for it. It’s just too pricey for me at the moment. xoxo

  • Great post! I agree with the ABH glow kit. They’re great. I really want the Sun-Dipped one, it’s so pretty! I’ve heard so many mixed reviews on the Better Than Sex mascara so I’ve been holding out on it. Probably not long until I give in and try it for myself, haha.

Nicole | In The Life of NM

    • LOL hopefully you can get a mini version or something to try it out like I did! I know you can get it right now online at Sephora for 100 points, but I’m not sure if it’s different on the Canadian site.

  • Great honest post! I love the sound of the Glow kit so much! Gemma x

  • I love the ABH sun dripped glow kit! I really want to try the Ben Nye powder but now i’m not so sure :/ I’ve tried the MUFE ultra HD foundation, but i really didn’t like, it doesn’t sit right on my skin. I think i’d like the original formula though xx

    http://www.lpagebeauty.com

    • I think the Ben Nye powder would work better for medium tan and deeper complexions! Honestly, I like all of my other setting powders better!

  • I did not like NARS Orgasm. I like their Dolce Vita blush much better. I love the Too Faced mascara, but I don’t always want to shell out that money, so I’ve been enjoying the dupe, Rimmel ScandalEyes. Oh! That reminds me, I haven’t used my MUFE HD foundation in a while! I love the coverage! I wasn’t too happy when I first bought it because it used to break me out. I’m glad I stuck with it though!

    • I want to try Dolce Vita. It looks so pretty. I didn’t know Rimmel ScandalEyes was a dupe. I need to try it out. Thanks!

  • i actually love nars orgasm. it was one of the first high end make up items i ever bought and i love it. the better than sex mascara is one of my faves too.

    loovelle.blogspot.com

    • Better Than Sex is so good! I like NARS Orgasm, but I like their other blushes I have better :). xx

  • I’ve tried one of the banana powder dupes and it’s more of a pale yellow, so it’s more wearable for me :)

    Velvet Blush

    • Yes! I think pale yellow works a lot better. I wish I had known that when I bought the Ben Nye powder lol. xx

  • I love this post! I have tried a few products from this post, Nars Orgasm, Too Faced BTS mascara and MUFE Ultra HD foundation. I’m still testing the MUFE foundation, I am absolutely in love with the latest Water Blend foundation but am still on the fence about Ultra HD. And I hate, yes hate, Nars Orgasm! On me it’s just a glitter bomb and looks absolutely horrid. Too Faced BTS mascara is just okay for me but then again, my lashes are so pathetic that extremely few mascaras actually make a difference.

    Shireen | Reflection of Sanity

    • Thanks, lovely! I want to try the MUFE Water Blend foundation! I feel like Too Faced BTS is one of the few mascaras that doesn’t clump up my lashes lol!

  • I have that mascara. Seriously the best ever! But the rest of these products look really great too, I wanna try that NARS blush.

-Lily from With Love Lily Rose

  • Great post. I’ve been wanting to try the MUFE foundation for a while, sounds like its worth taking the plunge to try it!
    A Blushing Beauty Blogx

  • NARS Orgasm is really so hyped up. It’s a pretty blush and I like it but I actually don’t reach for it that much. I have never tried Ben Nye Banana Powder. The Too Faced mascara is one of my favorite high-end mascaras, love it. The ABH Glow kit, yes worth the hype. I have sun-dipped too. Great post!

    Ann-Marie | http://facetocurls.com

    • Yes, exactly! It’s a pretty blush, but there are better shades in their range. I really think the name just hyped it up a lot more too.

  • I always thought the Ben Nye Banana Powder MUST leave a yellow cast. That’s why I’ve always steered clear. I picked up the Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder, which I’ve been very impressed with, but is probably most suitable for pale skin tones. I completely agree with you about Nars Orgasm. I’ve grown to love it, but I have to have the right makeup combination to pull it off. I particularly like Zen & Deep Throat. Xx

    Tania | When Tania Talks

    • You’re smart to have steered clear of the banana powder haha. I really want to try Deep Throat :)

  • Your pictures are absolutely beautiful, I’m in love! I would love to try the Too Faced mascara, I adore the sound of it, and from the Banana Powder you got me thinking about banana bread mmmm haha! xD xx

    • Aww thank you! Your pictures are so beautiful! Hahah banana bread > banana powder any day! xx

  • I definitely want to get my hands on the ABH highlight palette soon, it’s too pretty to resist!

    • Isn’t it? I was trying to resist, but just couldn’t resist it any longer lol xx

  • Oh no such a shame about the banana powder, I’ve had in on my wishlist for so long but don’t think I’ll bother now! I am glad to hear that you love the TooFaced mascara because that’s also been something I’ve had my eyes on for some time now x

    Beauty with charm

    • I think a pale yellow would look much better on your skin tone versus this one simply because it’s SO yellow. I hope you do try the BTS mascara! xx

  • Ms Tantrum

You saved e some cash by striking banana powder off my list. Thank you Nida :)

  • The Sunday Mode

I had kind of low expectations for the Too Faced mascara as well but as it dried out a little more I actually ended up really liking it!

    http://www.thesundaymode.com

  • I’ve heard a lot about the nars orgasm blush, but if there’s products out there that are better than I would rather give it a miss.

  • I sooo agree about the Banana Powder! Looked fine when I put it on and then I went outside and took some pictures and wtf! It looked awful haha. In love with the Better Than Sex mascara too! One of my faves for sure!

  • I love the Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara. It’s definitely one of my all time favourites :)

    http://sandrafsilva.blogspot.co.uk

  • Samileen

OMG I have to try the Ben nye powder. Heard so much about it. Even the Makeup forever Hd foundation.. Though have to chime in with you on better than sex mascara and Nars blush, one of my all time favorites.

    Sam || Beautydetour

    • I’m not a huge fan of the banana powder, but hopefully it works for you!

  • The banana powder sounded like the most interesting. Too bad it’s a bust.

  • I couldn’t agree more! They definitely are 5 beauty products worth the hype! x

    http://www.serenbird.com

  • MUFE Ultra HD is one of my absolute fave foundations! I also realllly want to get one of the ABH glow kits, they’re so pretty!

    Olive & Ivy

  • Bernadette

I so want to try that too face mascara, i keep hearing wonderful things. And that makeup geek foundation, because it sounds right up my ally! I didn’t mind the ben nye powder, i liked it and like how it wasn’t too yellow and it was finely milled. A person’s skin tone definitely impacts the experience with the banana powder.

    http://www.themakeupaficionado.com

    • I’m so jealous it worked for you! I loved it until I noticed the mustard triangle haha

      • Bernadette

Skin tone definitely plays a role though the packaging is bloody annoying, it’s pretty hard to not make a mess.

  • Wow, nice collection of beauty products. I have used this foundation, It gives a full coverage and nice glow to the skin.

  • Ela

Why is the MAC Mineralize better than Nars’ Orgasm? I want to buy the latter just to see whether it’s worth the hype :(
    Ela | http://www.stealingyoursunbeams.wordpress.com

    • NARS Orgasm isn’t a bad blush. It’s pretty. I just prefer the MAC mineralize blushes like Warm Soul over it.
