Benefit Dandelion Shy Beam Review

If a product says it highlights the skin– I’m in.

Benefit released their Dandelion Shy Beam, which is a nude baby pink matte highlighter that is great for all skin types and is supposed to add a natural radiant highlight to the skin. The matte part is what interested me so I decided to give it a go and see how I liked it so of course I had to share my thoughts with you!

The Good |

  • Nice formula
  • Shimmer free
  • Easy to blend
  • Packaging is super cute
  • Natural

The Bad |

  • Price may not fit everyone’s budget ($26)
  • Pink tones don’t suit all skin tones

I love that this product is matte because even though I don’t shy away from shimmer, it’s nice to change things up a bit. The formula is creamy, but not too thick nor too runny. It blends out easily with both a synthetic brush and a makeup sponge. It is opaque so somedays I apply this under the eyes as a highlighter/concealer, but if you have darker circles then I suggest applying a concealer first.

I do like this when I want a more subtle highlight. It’s great for applying under the eyes, on the cheek bones, down the nose, etc — all the usual areas you’d highlight. It’s pretty subtle on my skin tone, but just brightens and adds a bit of radiance to the skin. It says it’s matte, and that’s true because there’s no shimmer, but it’s not a flat matte so it doesn’t make your skin look dry or crusty, and it wears well. I personally like to set it with the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Diffused Light to add more radiance and glow.

Since it has a pink tone to it I don’t think it would suit all skin tones. I think this would work best for fair to medium skin tones because this could end up looking a bit ashy or unnatural on deeper complexions.

The Verdict |

This is a beautiful product! However, I can’t say it’s become a must have for me. Even though the packaging is super cute and the product itself is really nice, I still tend to gravitate to my MAC Prep+Prime Highlighting Pen in Light Boost because it’s more convenient since it comes in a pen-like form, and it brightens up my complexion a bit better because it’s more yellow.

  • It sounds perfect for me! Subtle but adds a little pink tone to give me some color. I love highlighters and I am in the market for a good one after trying some flukes. I’m still a bit more tempted to just jump straight to trying the Mac prep+prime highlighting pen though because Mac can do no wrong haha

    • I highly recommend the MAC prep + prime pens!! They’re the same price and they have a more rose toned one that you’d love! I don’t even know how many of their highlighting pens I’ve gone through.

  • This sounds lovely! Even though I have fair skin tone I like yellow-toned highlighters on my skin a lot better than pink-toned ones. I do have a few pinky ones, but definitely don’t reach for them too often.

    Thirteen Thoughts

    • Same! I think this still looks nice on my skin tone, but I still definitely prefer yellow toned ones more.

  • I feel like this would be great for people with pale skins. I definitely tend to prefer a more golden highlight but the opacity of this is really incredible!

    • I also prefer more yellow/golden highlights! The pink tone is nice under the eyes though to slightly color correct.

  • Sounds like a nice product but I’m medium/olive skintone so not sure how it would work for me. I usually like golden base highlight!

    • It seems like most people like more golden/yellow highlights, including myself!

  • I agree, the product may be nice but you can get a good highlight for cheaper :)

  • As you say, I’m not sure the pink would be for me! The MAC Prep & Prime on the other hand looks pretty perfect :) xx
