In its own way, the blogging world has become its own business. It’s a heavily saturated market and thousands upon thousands of people aspire to make full time blogging their careers. However, simply writing great quality content is no longer enough to grow your blog. You have to go to the mountain.

Grow Your Blog With This One Rule

My marketing professor would always stress that we needed to understand several key terms before we could really delve deeper into both business and marketing. One term he always stressed is the the 80/20 rule. It means that 20% of your customers produce 80% of your sales. This is also true when it comes to blogging, but tweak it a little. Instead, it means that 20% of your time should be spent writing content while 80% of your time should be spent promoting it.

There’s the age old saying, “if a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?” The same goes with writing blog posts. Does it matter if you produce great quality content, but no one reads it? Obviously if you’re blogging simply because you love writing (I do!) and not because you’re trying to make a living off of it, then that it what you should do. But, promotion is key if you want to gain more readers and have a voice in the niche you’ve chosen. In that case, a lot more energy should be spent towards marketing. Quality content is still very important, but exposure is necessary if you want to grow your reach.

Promotion is key.

Social media is the best tool for promoting your blog posts. Instagram and Twitter are the most popular and widespread tools used to grow blogs. But, don’t forget about sites like Pinterest and Reddit because in a way they have become their own search engine tools.

Don’t forget about Google and other search engines when writing your content. One of the easiest things you can do to promote your content is by installing an SEO tool to your website. I’ve talked about this in the must have free WordPress plugins post I wrote a while back, and I still highly recommend it. Studies have shown that people rarely scroll past the 2nd page of Google so ranking on the first page is one of the best ways to grow your blog. My most popular posts are the ones that have ranked on the first page of Google and Google images. I highly recommend installing an SEO tool to your site to make promotion easy and seamless.

  • This is great advice! Promoting your blog is just as important as the content!

  • I agree, great advice! I’ve been focused on my content: interesting subjects, beautiful pictures, etc., but having some trouble to promote my blog. I’m just not a huge fan of aggressive marketing. Trying to find a balance there!

    • I feel the same exact way! I’m not into aggressive marketing either. Quite honestly, that puts me off from wanting to visit someone’s blog. Finding a balance is very important :)

  • I’m with Blogger so do you have any recommendations for SEO tools?

    Shireen | Reflection of Sanity

    • I honestly have no idea. I’ve never used Blogger so I don’t really know. I’m sorry :(

  • Great post :) I am always finding ways to grow my blog, I mean who isn’t

I feel like promotion is always something I suck at!

    • I think the best way to promote is really to build relationships between other bloggers and readers! Promotion is something I’m constantly working on too because I don’t want to be aggressive or annoying. There’s definitely a tasteful way to do it!

  • I’m so poor when it comes to promoting my blog :( I guess I’m still learning how to effectively spread the word about it.

    • I definitely understand that. It’s hard especially since there are so many bloggers out there now! I think it honestly just takes time and practice!

  • Oh I’ve heard of the 20/80 rule but I haven’t really put it into practice! I must admit I’m pretty lazy with checking my analytics for actual blog posts and seeing which ones perform the best. I kind of just like to write what I want hahah, but I definitely need to get more serious x

    • I think writing about what you want is so important because it is more personable!

  • Great tips, I just blog as a hobby but if you wanted to monetise it to its maximum potential then yes definitely, there are so many important things to consider!

    • Thanks Dom. That means a lot :). I’ll probably end up doing a whole post on SEO. I’m not sure what platform you’re using, but for WordPress you just install the Yoast SEO plugin and follow the directions. It’s super easy :)

      • Dom

Hi Nida, I’m using Squarespace. If you have any idea please let me know love. Thank you!

  • This is so true! If I didn’t try to promote my blog across social media and comment on other blogs which help to make my blog visible I don’t think I had any regular readers at all! Blogging, even as a hobby, requires some good amount of work. x

    • i completely agree!

    • Very true :). Blogging is definitely very time consuming even as a hobby, but I love it :)

  • The Sunday Mode

I agree that promotion is key, the thing about promotion though is that it takes time so sometimes it’s hard to strike a nice balance between spending time creating great new content and spending time promoting it!

    • I agree! Promotion is definitely very time consuming. Balance is definitely key :)

  • Jasmine Simone

This is so true. When I took a break from blogging a barely got any views. But when I started to promote again I got the weekly views in one day!

    • I’m glad you agree :). I never used to promote my blog when I first started blogging because I felt embarrassed lol, and to be honest I still don’t promote it that much, but the little promotion I do gives me good traffic :)

  • Thank you so much for sharing this tip Nida. I’ve heard of the 20/80 rule because I did Business/Management in college. I do however need to start putting it to serious practice though! xx

    • I’m glad you enjoyed it! I had never heard of it before my marketing class. That marketing minor has definitely come in handy now :)

  • Masha

True that. People in my life find it silly how much time I spend shooting, editing, writhing, researching, promoting and so on. But I love it so so much, makes me feel like part of a community that is on the same wavelength as I.

  • Love these tip and so so so true!!! :D
