Worth The Hype? | Gerard Cosmetics Hydra-Matte Liquid Lipstick Review

Gerard Comsetics liquid lipsticks worth the hype? Gerard liquid lipstick review
Gerard Cosmetics liquid lipsticks worth the hype?

Gerard Cosmetics Hydra-Matte liquid lipsticks have become really popular because they’re not supposed to be drying– hence the “hydra” part of the “matte”– so I picked up two shades to review and see if they’re worth the hype.

Cher — warm rose with brown undertones
Serenity — warm pink/peach with brown undertones

The Good |

  • Smooth application
  • Shorter wand for easy application
  • Creamy, but thin formula
  • Transfer proof

The Bad |

  • Only available online
  • Not much product– Net Wt. .059 oz/ 1.75 mL
  • Pricey for amount of product

The formula of these is like a creamy mousse so it applies opaque, smooth, and isn’t streaky or uneven. It’s slightly thinner compared to some formulas, such as the Stila liquid lipsticks (review here), but it’s not super liquidy like the ColourPop Ultra Matte Lip liquid lipsticks (review here and here). They dry down pretty quickly– about 30 seconds– so you do have time to work with it and apply it nicely before it sets. At first, it does have a slight tackiness, but it’s not that noticeable once it dries.

The doe foot applicator is pretty standard, and it picks up a good amount of product so you don’t have to continuously dip back into the tube to get more. You also don’t get so much on the wand that it applies messily. The bottle itself is pretty short so the shorter wand allows for better controlled application.

The finish is matte, but it does live up to the “hydra-matte” claim because it’s not super drying and is comfortable on the lips. Plus, it’s transfer/doggy kiss proof as long as you’re not eating. If you do have a meal containing any oil it will wear down since liquid lipsticks tend to do that, but it fades pretty evenly.

It is pretty pricey considering full price is $20 and the net weight is .059 oz/ 1.75 mL of product, while the net weight of a Kat Von D liquid lipstick–also $20– is .22 oz/ 6.6 mL. But, they tend to always have some sort of deal going on so you generally never have to pay full price.

The Verdict |

I can see the hype with these because they’re comfortable, opaque, easy to apply, and not drying. Are they worth the full price of $20 considering the amount of product? No. But, like I said, they always have some type of promotion going on so you’ll rarely pay full price for these. I picked up mine during their Cyber Monday sale and believe I only paid about $15 for both, which is a really good deal! I DEFINITELY prefer these over their lipsticks, which I didn’t get on with at all.

  • This is one of those ‘youtube’ popular brands that I don’t really have an interest in, mainly because they are really pricey. I’d rather buy from Colourpop or BH Cosmetics. It’s nice to know they aren’t drying because I can’t stand dry lip products. The swatches are really pretty, glad you liked these!

    • YES. I personally would also buy from ColourPop… I can’t get enough CP products haha.

  • Saskia

This brand has been on my wishlist for a while, I definitely want to try them sooner or later. Too bad of the price/volume ratio though, but I will keep an eye open for discounts. Thanks for writing this! xx

  • Stephanie Hartley

I’ll definitely be looking out for these being on sale now. I don’t own any liquid lipsticks *so much blogger shame*, and these sound easier to apply than many others

I normally don’t mind spending a pretty penny on a product if I know it’ll be good, but £20 for this seems a bit steep for me.

    • Yeah, it’s pretty expensive considering the amount of product you get!

  • I actually really like these. I think they’re some of the best liquid lipsticks i’ve tried. I’ve not tried the Kat Von D ones, they’re difficult to get hold of here in the Uk. xx

    • Aw yeah, I hear the KVD ones are hard to find in the UK. I personally prefer the Jouer liquid lippies and Dose of Color ones to this formula!

  • These shades look so pretty. I have been loving the NYX soft matte lip creams and I find that they are comfortable and long lasting. Read many great reviews on Gerard cosmetics so im excited to give it a try!

I’ve never tried any Gerard Cosmetics products myself, but I’ve been looking to get more liquid lipsticks as I’m obsessed with them! Serenity looks like a lovely bright lip colour for spring/summer, so I’ll be sure to keep a look out for any discounts for it! :) x

    • I’m not a huge fan of the brand, and I honestly really hated their lipsticks, but their liquid lipsticks are nice as long as you can get a discount!

  • I must say I’m not a fan of their lipsticks either! I do like the sound of these though. Great review and love the shades you picked! :) xx

    • I feel bad saying it, but I like hate their lipsticks haha. These liquid lipsticks are a lot better! They’re still not my fave, but I can see the hype :). Thanks girly!

  • Wonderful review. I have been thinking about getting one of their liquid lipsticks. They are pricey from what I saw too.

    • Yeah, they are quite pricey. They’re doing a promo: Gerard40 gives you 40% off regular priced items right now.

  • I feel that Gerard Cosmetics is a really hit or miss company. I do enjoy their packaging, however. I just feel there is a lot of false hype around the company.

    Batty4Beauty.com

    • Yeah, that’s why I was so disappointed by their lipsticks, but their liquid lipsticks are honestly nice. I just don’t like how little product you receive for the price.

  • Samileen

The shades look absolutely lovely. I have been eyeing that Serenity shade for a really long time. Such a stunning shading I will grab it during some promotion sale, for sure.
