How To Make Your Own DIY Cushion Foundation

I’ve been lusting after the L’Oreal Cushion Foundation for ages now, but they don’t seem to carry my shade w4 (tears. so many tears) so I haven’t tested it out yet. Since I desperately want to try a cushion foundation, but also want to finish up my current foundations, I thought, “hey! Make your own.”

Making your own DIY cushion foundation is actually very simple as long as you have a cushion compact. I bought a new one at MemeBox for $7 or you can reuse a cushion compact if you’ve finished one up. Simply wash and disinfect the sponge and container, and it’s as good as new!

WHAT YOU NEED

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Spatula (to mix with)
  • Cushion foundation compact (new or recycled)
  • Tweezers (to take the cushion out carefully)
  • Base products you want (foundation, primer, highlighter, color corrector, serum, essence, etc)

In a bowl, mix together the foundation and all the other base products you like. I used the Koh Gen Do Aqua Foundation, NARS Sheer Glow, Josie Maran Argan Illuminizer, BECCA Backlight Priming Filter, Belif Aqua Bomb, Belif Hungarian Water Essence, Chanel Le Blanc De Chanel Illuminating Base, and Algenist Blue Color Correcting Drops— I went a little HAM! The only thing to be cautious about is using a foundation that contains oils because it will separate in the container. That’s why I didn’t use my Dior Nude Air Serum foundation since it tends to separate and needs a good shake before each use.

Once mixed, try it out on your face, if you like it, use some tweezer to gently remove the sponge from the container, and pour the foundation in. Fill it about half way otherwise it’ll overflow when you put the cushion in. I learned the hard way. Then, soak the sponge in the leftover foundation in the bowl and carefully insert it back into the case and give it a good push in. And there you have it– your own cushion foundation that’s been tailored to what want! Of course I went for a super glow ;)
