NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil Review

Everyone raves about the NARS Audacious lipsticks, which I have yet to purchase because I always get sidetracked and purchase the Velvet Matte Lip Pencils instead. They’re cheaper, more matte, great quality and come in a chubby lip pencil form, which makes applying them a breeze. So, continue reading for my NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil review.

Train Bleu | This was a favorite of mine all fall and winter because it is the perfect vampy lip shade. I don’t know what I ever did without this color before since I just purchased it this past fall. It glides on so easily, it is super pigmented, lasts a long time, very matte, but not drying and it is the epitome of fall/winter to me; the perfect deep eggplant- burgundy shade.

Cruella | I got this shade as a part of the Sephora VIB Rouge birthday set, and boy am I glad I did. This is a stunning scarlet red shade and I can see this looking great just about every skin tone. This may sound weird, but it is that “villain red” that is just so vibrant, and NARS must have been thinking the same thing since they named it Cruella. The color is very pigmented, rich, and lasts a long time. I will definitely be repurchasing this when I run out.

Left to Right: NARS Train Bleu, Cruella, Damned, Rikugien, and Bahama.

Damned | This is the most recent addition to my collection. For a while I really didn’t like pink shades on me, but lately I have been loving the deep raspberry magenta shade a lot. Plus, my queen Pam from True Blood wore this in season 3 so you know I had to have this.

BahamaThis is a new addition to my collection as well. I bought this then like three days later I bought Damned– I told you I have a problem! Anyway, I went in to buy Damned, but they were out of stock at that Sephora so I picked this up instead since I couldn’t leave empty handed! This is a gorgeous pink brown that is also very 90s– hey, I’m a 90s kid so the 90s lip trend makes me very happy. If you love pinky brown lipsticks, I would definitely try this out. It isn’t as expensive as some other lipsticks out there at $26, and it is great quality.

Rikugien | Okay so this one isn’t matte, but I thought I’d throw it in here since it’s the only Satin lip pencil I have, and will probably be the only one since I’m not a huge fan of glossy lips. I got this in the Sephora VIB Rouge birthday gift set as well, and I actually do enjoy this a lot more than I thought it would. It isn’t overly glossy, it is still pigmented, and feels very comfortable on the lips. The color is also very wearable, and a great day time rosy pink nude shade. If you don’t like matte lips and prefer glossier lip products, this is a great one.

The Good | Matte (but not overly drying), pretty good wear time (5-6 hours), pigmented, glide on easily, the shape makes it easy to apply.

The Bad | Have to sharpen them so you do lose some product each time you sharpen, not kiss proof.

The Verdict | These are really worth the splurge in my opinion. I think they have a pretty good color selection so you’re bound to find a color you like. They are matte, but they are still a little creamy and not completely drying. Hence, the velvet matte part. My three favorite out of the five would have to be Train Bleu, Damned, and Bahama; I can’t pick between these three because they’re all so pretty and different from one another. One thing that does bother me a little is that the cap seems to pop off easily so I’m afraid of throwing this in my purse because I don’t want it to open and get everywhere, but that isn’t a deterrent for me.

Have you tried any of the NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencils? What are your favorites? Let me know in the comments below!
