The oils that everyone wants on their face.
I’ve been coveting these Sunday Riley oils for the longest time, and I still have more on my wishlist. But for the time being I have both UFO and Luna. Every beauty channel, blog, magazine, you name it, raves about Luna. But, I don’t hear a ton of people talk about UFO. So, which one is right for you? And how did they work for me?
Sunday Riley UFO vs Luna Sleeping Oil | Which One Is Right for You?
alien approved skin?
UFO is their ultra-clarifying face oil that is targeted toward congested pores and acne. I’ve been using this since the day I got it– March 25– and have used it almost every night. My skin is combo, blemish prone, and my main concern is getting rid of acne scars so I thought this would be a great guy to try out. Boy was I right. My acne scars are still there.. but they’re fading. And my skin overall is brighter, more clear, more smooth, hydrated and just more calmed.
This is a medicated oil that has 1.5% salicylic acid, which is great for blemish prone skin, and the reason why I got this. But, what really sold me, and what I believe is the reason this smells very…. earthy…. is the addition of black cumin seed oil. It’s the second ingredient, and it’s a powerful one for acne prone skin. It also has:
- milk thistle seed oil– detoxifying, anti-inflammatory and an antioxidant
- cucumber seed oil– balances and encourages skin cell regeneration
- pomegranate seed oil– antioxidant that protects skin against sun damage, improves skin texture, and helps reverse skin damage
- flaxseed oil– reduces inflammation and helps repair the skin
- licorice root extract– brightens and helps fade dark spots
- … and a lot more!

If you suffer from blemishes and wish your skin were more clear, then I would highly suggest trying out this oil. I haven’t been using it that long and I’m already loving the results. Salicylic acid can be drying, but I haven’t experienced any drying since it is based in an oil. But, if I do need a little more moisture, I apply it on top of this. I always apply this oil on freshly cleaned skin so there’s no barrier between it and my face.
… or sleeping beauty in a bottle?
The Luna Sleeping Oil contains a trans-retinoic acid ester so it’s basically an oil based retinol. Retinol (a form of Vitamin A) is really good for the skin. Especially for anti-aging, boosting collagen to get rid of fine lines and wrinkles, and evening out the complexion, which is why so many people love it. I don’t see a huge difference in my skin when I use this oil. I’m not obsessed with it, but I do like it. I get better results with the UFO. My skin feels nice and moisturized and looks glowy after using the Luna. But, I think it would be better for someone who suffers from redness because it has blue tansy and chamomile oil. And for someone who is really looking for something anti-aging. This oil also has:
- avocado oil– antioxidant that moisturizes, smooths, soothes, and great for anti aging
- grape seed oil– antioxidant that helps prevent skin aging and has anti-inflammatory properties
- blackberry seed oil– fights free radicals and skin rejuvenating
- chia seed oil– rich in omega 3 and helps fight skin irritation
- … and a lot more! (this oil does contain dyes though)
… so which one?
Both oils have great ingredients that are anti aging and skin clearing, but I personally see better results with UFO because it targets more of my skin concerns. If you’re acne prone, and looking to clear up and even out the skin, I would suggest UFO. Luna is nice too, but that one is targeted more for people with larger pores, redness, and for anti aging since it’s a retinol oil. Luna is a great option if you want to start including retinol in your skincare routine, but don’t want to damage your skin because high strengths can be really drying and abrasive. Since the Luna is in an oil, it’s more gentle and doesn’t dry out the skin, which is why I think it’s such a popular product. Personally, I’ll still keep Luna in my routine as well since I am trying to prevent wrinkles and fine lines from coming around for a [long] while, you feel? But if I could only pick one, I’d have to give it to UFO.
