When winter rolls around it seems as though everyone forms a phalanx and chants, “moisturize, moisturize, moisturize.” But, winter skin, whether it’s on your face or body, needs moisture. And a little extra TLC never hurt either. So I teamed up with Dove to offer some winter skincare tips because no one wants dry, flaky, rough skin. Literally no one.

Don’t over-exfoliate.

Moisturizing is very important, and so is exfoliating– as long as you don’t overdo it. Dove dermatologist Dr. Alicia Barba says over-exfoliating can actually strip your skin of its natural oils, causing more harm (i.e. breakouts, itchy skin, redness) than good. It’s good to exfoliate, but do it in moderation, and try to use chemical exfoliants like glycolic acid, lactic acid, fruit enzymes; they’re gentler and won’t potentially scratch your skin.

Invest in hydrating products + layer.

Hydrating in layers is a great way to treat your skin to extra moisture in the winter. Find a hydrating cleanser that won’t strip your natural oils, invest in a lightweight essence, add a hyaluronic acid serum, and then top it off with a nourishing moisturizer.

Care for the rest of your body, too.

Buy a shower oil that hydrates your skin, exfoliate away the rough bumpy skin a few times a week, make sure to moisturize from the neck down as well to prevent rough, dry, flaky, and itchy skin. Most of all, make sure you don’t shower in boiling hot water. Yes, it feels amazing (oh I know), but it can dry out the skin even more– trust me, I’ve done this.

Don’t forget about your underarms.

In the winter we’re layering up and all those textures and fabrics are constantly rubbing against our underarms. Dr. Barba says it’s an important area that is easily overlooked so be sure to keep things clean and hydrated. Dove’s Advanced Care Antiperspirant is formulated with moisturizers to help alleviate irritation and leave your underarms soft and smooth. On top of that, it offers 48 hour odor and wetness protection. So keep your underarms hydrated, soft, smooth, odor free, and dry. Check it out here!

Have a bedtime routine.

Putting yourself in adult mode is hard. And so is giving yourself a bedtime in the winter when it’s chilly out, you’re cuddled up in big blanket, watching your fave Netflix show and sipping on some hot cocoa or wine (or both). The last thing you want to do is get up and do a routine. But, you can reduce pesky skin problems– collagen breakdown, fine lines, clogged pores, and blemishes– even with a simple 3 step routine: Cleanse every night before bed, add actives like retinol, vitamin c, AHAs, etc, and then moisturize. Even a simple routine will go a long way for the health of your skin.

SPF every day.

Every. Day. It doesn’t matter if it’s cloudy or rainy, UV rays are still coming through. If your skin is showing, apply SPF to it. It’s the best thing you can do for your skin year round.
