Gerard Cosmetics Hydra-Matte liquid lipsticks have become really popular because they’re not supposed to be drying– hence the “hydra” part of the “matte”– so I picked up two shades to review and see if they’re worth the hype.
Cher — warm rose with brown undertones
Serenity — warm pink/peach with brown undertones
The Good |
- Smooth application
- Shorter wand for easy application
- Creamy, but thin formula
- Transfer proof
The Bad |
- Only available online
- Not much product– Net Wt. .059 oz/ 1.75 mL
- Pricey for amount of product
The formula of these is like a creamy mousse so it applies opaque, smooth, and isn’t streaky or uneven. It’s slightly thinner compared to some formulas, such as the Stila liquid lipsticks (review here), but it’s not super liquidy like the ColourPop Ultra Matte Lip liquid lipsticks (review here and here). They dry down pretty quickly– about 30 seconds– so you do have time to work with it and apply it nicely before it sets. At first, it does have a slight tackiness, but it’s not that noticeable once it dries.
The doe foot applicator is pretty standard, and it picks up a good amount of product so you don’t have to continuously dip back into the tube to get more. You also don’t get so much on the wand that it applies messily. The bottle itself is pretty short so the shorter wand allows for better controlled application.
The finish is matte, but it does live up to the “hydra-matte” claim because it’s not super drying and is comfortable on the lips. Plus, it’s transfer/doggy kiss proof as long as you’re not eating. If you do have a meal containing any oil it will wear down since liquid lipsticks tend to do that, but it fades pretty evenly.
It is pretty pricey considering full price is $20 and the net weight is .059 oz/ 1.75 mL of product, while the net weight of a Kat Von D liquid lipstick–also $20– is .22 oz/ 6.6 mL. But, they tend to always have some sort of deal going on so you generally never have to pay full price.
The Verdict |
I can see the hype with these because they’re comfortable, opaque, easy to apply, and not drying. Are they worth the full price of $20 considering the amount of product? No. But, like I said, they always have some type of promotion going on so you’ll rarely pay full price for these. I picked up mine during their Cyber Monday sale and believe I only paid about $15 for both, which is a really good deal! I DEFINITELY prefer these over their lipsticks, which I didn’t get on with at all.
